Pescando o almoço | Fishing lunch

IMG_0275.JPG

The kids have the responsability to bring today's lunch for the family. They left early the camp, and head to the river, to the place where their father taught them how to fish.

They are both nervous, but determined to bring back a delicious luch for the tribe. Fishing requires a lot of patience, so, they fish in turns: while one is fishing, the other collects some plants that the wizard of the tribe asked for, and then, they switch.

Little by little the plant bag is getting stuffed and the fish bucket is also almost full. Looks like the kids are going to make it!

De vigia | On watch

IMG_9819

Spring is here, and the bear mountain have woken up from their hibernation, skinny and starving. They need to gain wheight in order to survive, so, in this time of year, they became more agressive and adventurous concerning finding food.

Tribe's camp is an good place to find an easy meal, so, after a few scary moments in the past, when some bears attacked the camp to find food, the tribe decided that is these first weeks of spring, a patrol woul be on watch, in order to keep the animals away from tribe's camp.

This task is fulfilled by younger indians, that maitain their day busy and it's an opportunity for them to develop their skills on following tracks, camouflagge and hunting. In no time, they will be responsible for feeding and defending the tribe, so the more they are prepared, better for all.

Na pesca | Fishing

IMG_9797

Powerful-Bear and Fast-Lynx don't like to go fishing. Fishing demands an infinite patience, bigger abilities and a complete mastery in several technics to catch the right fish. The women in the tribe demand variety concerning food, especially when spring comes, and the man have no option, instead weting their feet.

Their try to skip it, arguing and hunting the most tastefull meat they can find, but everybody knows that when the girls stuck something in their heads, nothing will remove it. So, today, the guys came to the river, after making an offer to the great spirits so their quest can be a success.

Chefe | Chief

IMG_9093

The tribe has a new chief. Fearfull-Panter was the lider in the past 30 years. His expirience and wisdom helped the tribe to overcame so many challenges, sticking together and prosper. Unfortunatly his life come to an end, and he lives among the great spirits now.

Brave-Deer was elected new chief, after many hours of tribe's conseil. Guied by the sourcerer, every indian had a chance to participate in the conseil: man, woman, old and young, even the children, as long as they could speak. Everyone could be there and take part in this moment.

This is how Brave-Deer realized that so many people thought he was the best choice. Weighted, assertive, but also brave, fearless and firm in his belifs. Those were the reasons to be chosen to be the new tribe's lider. Tonight, in a special ceremony, his name will be carved in the tribe's totem pole.

Novo guerreiro | New warrior

IMG_9085

Tonight, Vigilant-Meerkat, will be nominated the most recent warrior of the tribe. He overcome every challenge imposed to all 15 year old boys, and later on, he will put his shiel on tribe's service, as a warrior.

He came to ask spirit prottection to Awê, the tribe's sourcerer. If the spirits are willing to protect Vigilant-Meerkat, he will be able to participate in the ceremony tonight.

Awê will give him a powerfull potion, that will immerse him in the spirit world, from where he should bring a message. His first words when waking up, will be vital to know whether the spirits are with him or not.

After swallowing the misture, Vigilant-Meerkat fallen into a very agitated deep sleep, from where he took very long to came out, causing some concern to the wizard. Finally, after a long time in trance, he woke up, grabbed sourcerer's hands and said: "Awê, in my dream, a great eagle followed me, quite high in the sky, wherever i went!"

And Awê knew that Vigilant-Meerkat had the spirits protection.

This horse steam thing torned apart our prairie. It makes such a loud noise, it makes our air smelly and it destroys animal paths. This white man doesn't care about the consequences about he's actions!

In no time, their infected houses will be everywhere, and they will leave their garbage wherever they go. The animals leave behind their footprint trail, the white man leaves behind his dirtiness.

Some animals will learn not to came here, but many will succumb at this thing speed. Us, the indians, will maintain the distance as long as we can, but i fear that we will to succumb before this ruthless with power: some of us will leave in tiny territories, being urged to end, but many of us will fall under the white man traps: fire arms, smoke, drinks or even money.

Hard and challenging times, for us, but especially for Mother Nature!

A tribo em perigo | Endangered tribe

IMG_6194

The canyon's path is long and dangerous. The horses are edgy and they have to be very carefull, as a fall will be certainly fatal. Two of the most brave indians from the tribe, Brave-Bear and Agile-Cougar keep calming down the animals, as their mission is to important: war is on the doorstep of the tribe's territory and they must seek help within their neighbours.

Once allys, the two tribes had a powerfull alliance and all of the territory lived in peace witch was established for many years. Therefore everyone forgot to preserve it and make the alliance endure. Selfishness took advantage and nowadays the tribes live completly apart from one another.

Today, the white man threatens the territory, and one of the tribes is in danger. There can only be enought warriors to face the enemy, if the tribes join forces together. The survival of the tribe lies in Brave-Bear and Agile-Couga's hands and in their negotiation skills.

May the great spirits be with them on this mission!

Sorriso-Dourado e Raio-de-Luz | Golden-Smile and Ray-of-Light

Longa vida a Sorriso-Dourado e a Raio-de-Luz!

The relationship between an indian and his horse is a very special one. Tribe laws says that an indian should capture and tame his own horse, and established early a strong and longlasting relation with the animal.

Young indias are considered able to capture horses, once they take part in one of the tribes hunt for food. Many need several days to accomplish the task. Others don't need that long.

Golden-Smile had just achieved that goal. It took him all day long, and it was just at the sun down, when the last rays of light touched the ground that he got it. He called the horse Ray-of-Light and the animal seemed to like it. The two of them will spend the next three days alone. They will learn about each other, how to bond, and trust one another.

By the end of these days, they will return to the tribe, were it will be performed a consecration ritual by the tribe's totem pole. The indians believe that, if the animal doesn't escape by the end of the three days, that's because bouth spirits came together in a special bond, witch can only be broken with the death of one of them.

Long live Golden-Smile and Ray-of-Light!

A caçada | The hunt

It's been a few days since a big grey bear is getting closer to the camp. The animal must be starving as it continues do get closer and closer. The indians are worried and afraid of what the bear might do if and when it enters the camp.

The situation is serious enought to summon up the tribe council. By the totem pole the sorcerer lightened the fire and added some herbs that invite do peace and serenity and keep a nice warm smell in the air. After two long hours, the council reached a decision: the bear had to be killed.

Indians don't kill an animal for no reason. Not even a bear. But this bear must be very old or very sick for not be able to feed itself anymore and need to came closer to the camp to find out some food.

Kayke e Aukanaii, the bravest hunters of the tribe were chosen to the task and left camp early in the morning. The tribe waits their return to devote the bear to the spirits by the pole. Bear's skin will be turned in to clothing. It's meat will feed the tribe and it's bones will be pocessed to became tools and toys for the children.

Good hunt Kayke e Aukanaii!

Em guerra?!? | At war?!

The man of the tribe are in commotion. They say that the White Mane is coming closer and closer, to the indian territory. Buffalos and mustangs are changing their traditional paths and hidding in different places, as they are being slaughter. By instinct, they already know that they must run away from this evil man.

For now, tribe's territory is not in danger. The mountain and it's hard way of life, keeps away those who are not really interested in staying. Despite this, they know, that the white man will try to reach them, as they are already trying to in other tribes, wich territories are being severely threatened.

All the tribe's weapons were collected. They are being cleaned, repaired and sharpened and there are man in charge of building new ones too. Young indian, are being taught in the art of war, and how to fight. Their skills of scouting, bushcrafting and survival are being put to the test, as everyone will be important in the days to come.

There's a lot of tension in the air, but for now, it's certain that the white man will not win!
