Donkey, o campeão | Donkey, the champion

20231128_105219.jpg

This is Donkey, the most evil poney from the farm. We don't have another like it. It gives us twice the work we have with all other poneys. The only way i can get him quiet enough to bath and groom it, is giving it some treats. It is a slow eater, so i have the time to do it.

Donkey is always alone, as it is always bothering other poneys, so the other animals run from it all the time. It bites the others, and never keeps them alone in their peaceful lives. Dad is building a smaller fence, so Donkey can be put inside, as the other animals start to neigh loudly, as Donkey approches.

But it also is our champion! It got strength, resistance, doesn't give up and likes challenges. Never trowned me into the ground and i already won some prizes with it. Dad said i can keep it, as long it doesn't trow me down. Cause if that happens, Donkey as to go.

Dad thinks we can win our next competition, cause we've been training hard for that. I hope so, and also hope i can keep Donkey until it is old.

Depressa! | Hurry up!

IMG_8001

The circus is in the village and the girls can't wait to finish all the taks left to do. It is a very small village, so, this king of happening cannot be skipped.

The animals notice the girls fuss and do not like their hurry way today. Miss all the gossiping between them, the calm gestures while fulfilling their tasks and of course of the pets. Today ther is none of that. The girls execute every task methodically, to spend the less time possible in each one.

Tonight it's party night and they can hardly wait get home and get ready for it.

A vida atarefada da quinta | Busy farm life

IMG_8002

Today the day is expected to be busy. There are two goats about to deliver and quite probably, today is the day. Besides that, Esther the most clumsy poney at the farm will have (once more) the vet's visit, as he will suture an ugly wound, made trying to get out of the fence.

And later on, will arrive three dwarf pigs, that were abandoned by some itinerant jugglers that passed by a couple of days ago. The animals didn't make all that profit and were slowing them on their travelling from town to town.

Life on the farm never stops!

Arca de Noé | Noah's arch

20211121_134032

Primeiro nenhum queria entrar.

First, not one wanted to get in. Then, the challenge was to settle each one, so they did not eat each other. Meanwhile it started raining and they all calm down a bit, because they felt safe. But the rain kept pouring and not one would get out, at all. The next challenge was to feed them all up, just enough, so they not feel tempted to taste the neighbour, and so that the arch would end up with more animals than just the ones on the top of the food chain. At last, the sun came and all animals could come and go at ease, exploring a new land, until they did not returned anymore. The job was done!

Um galinheiro exigente | A demanding hen house

IMG_7549

These chicken are kind of spoiled. If i neglect just a tinny little bit cleaning their space, the eggs automatically decrease in quantity. Over there, the rooster is so funny. If there’s something out of place in the hen house, it start to bite my heels, until i have everything in place.

This is a demanding condominium, but in the other hand, i have the most magnificent eggs of the surrondings. Therefore, none of these animals end up in the pot. They live here, quietly till the end of their lives, even when they don’t give any more eggs.

The king of the hen as been doing quite a good job. It’s offsprings are plenty and powerful and are present in almost every hen house nearby. And the noise he makes as soon as any animal comes near the hen? Whether be the farm cats or dogs, or even a fox or a mongoose, it cackles loudly to defend it’s castle.

If i were a chicken, i guess i wouldn’t mind to live in this condominium!

Novo dia na quinta | A new day at the farm

IMG_6800

A new day rises on the farm and the melons are ready for harvest. The family gathers in the barn to begin a long day of labour. They all know that as soon as the kids have their cart filled with fruit, they will disappear. Nevertheless, they will fulfill their task and give their contribution, so no one abdicates of their presence. The dog will follow them, wherever they go, and will spend the day moving back and forth fulfilling it's task of guarding the kids as the adults work. This way, grown ups will know that wherever they are, the little ones are not involved in a dangerous adventure.

Pedro, o marnoto | Peter, the saline worker

Peter started to work in the salt fields just to earn some pocket money for the vacations, when he was just a kid. By his uncle's hand, he got to know the skils to extract the handmade salt and that's how he learned to deal with the salt water, the wind and the rain, combining them to produce the best salt from the region.

Without noticing it, he got the hang and the taste of it and when it was time to choose a career, he chose this one. He is no longer a boy. He is a man with tanned skin from all the hours working at the sun and the robust body of all the hard work. But he also as in his face the smile of those who know that they do a very good job.

Pequenos produtores | Local farmers

20200328_162810[1]

Spring arrived at the farm and there's new fresh products every day. Mauro and Cristiana are local producers that open their farm gate everyday to sell their products. Whity and Browny already know the ritual, and even with their foals, they keep giving the clients a small head-butt, as a greeting.

Mauro and Cristiana already know so well their clients: they know that Miss Francisca likes her apples riped, that Mr. Joaquim always carry carrots with the branch and that Matilde loves to reap her own lettuces. And there´s Mr. Francisco who always takes a little bit of fresh milk cause it reminds him his childhood, when supermarkets didn´t have milk yet, and he had to get it from the farms.

Época das abóboras | Pumpkin season

IMG_1156

The pumpin season is here. Nodoby likes to say fairwell to Summer, but starting the new season that brings cold, wind and rain, playing in the fields, is very funny for the kids.

Uncle Rafael brought their nephews to the farm, so they help to pick the pumpkins. Later, they will join aunt Carla in the kitchen, and help her sorting pumpkin seeds to roast them to make snacks. They also will cook pumpkin jam, and of course, they will beg for Uncle Rafael to help them make pumpkin scary faces.

After all, Autumn can be very funny!

Jo e os cavalos | Jo and the horses

IMG_9235

Josefa inherited from her grandmother two things: the name, wich she simply hates, demanding to be treated as Jo; and the passion for horses. Her most happy memory is the first time she galloped. She was three years old and her grandmother sat her on the horse, close to her and softly said to her: we are gonna fly!

Since that day, whenever someone didn´t knew Jo's whereabout, she most likely be at the stables, with the horses.

Her natural skill to take care of the horses was equal to her ability to ride them. Grandmother teached her to have respect and compassion for the animals. She showed her how a gentle voice and a firm hand would do much more than the whip or the spurs.

Jo is still a girl, but gradmother already trusts her to heal some of the many horses she has on the farm to heal up. There´s no doubt that Jo´s future are the horses.
