As cartas do André | Manny's letters

Sempre que recebe uma carta, o André pede ajuda à professora da cidade, para a ler e obviamente responder. Desde miúdo que trabalha como cocheiro da diligência, para ajudar a família e por isso a escola nunca foi uma prioridade, porque o que era mesmo preciso, era colocar comida na mesa. Por isso, o seu banco sempre foi o da dianteira da diligência e nunca o da escola.

Agora que ele vive na cidade, onde pode ganhar mais dinheiro, a única forma de contactar com maior regularidade os pais, que ficaram no vilarejo onde ele nasceu, a alguns quilómetros de distância, é por carta. Do lado de cá, a professora Elisabete ajuda-o a ler a carta que chegou e a escrever a respectiva resposta. Do lado de lá, é o Sr. Matias do telégrafo, amigo de longa data do pai do André que os ajuda nas mesmas tarefas.

O fim da tarde de hoje, será por isso, no banco da escola, onde a professora Elisabete aproveita para lhe ensinar os rudimentos da leitura e da escrita.

Whenever Manny receives a letter, he asks for the town teacher help, to read and answer it. Since he was a young boy, he’s been working as a coachman, to help the family. School was never a priority, as putting some food on the table was really the important thing. So, he never sat down in the school benches, only in the front stagecoach bench!

Now that he lives in the city, where he can earn a bit more money, the only way to contact his parents in a regular way, that still live in the village where he’s born, some miles away, is by letter. From here, teacher Elisabeth helps him to read and to reply to it. From the other side, is Mr. Mathias from the telegraph, an old friend of Manny’s father, that help is parents in that task.

So, the end of the afternoon will be spent in the school benches, where Elisabeth uses that time to teach him the basics of reading and writing.
