A falésia | The cliff

IMG_1567.JPG

No one can put sense in the head of this tourists. As many danger signals that may be put in this location, there's always someone who take a chance, that comes closer, that takes one more little step forward, or leans a little bit more to take a better look. They say that there's no danger. After all it's just a cliff straight to the sea! And then, they get an unespected imbalance, are hit by treacherous wind or slip suddently and are trowned from the cliff.

And then, then here we are to rescue these souls. We got people that barely had a scratch, but others had almost every bone of the body broken. We consider our mission successfull if we deliver this souls breathing at the hospital.

This will be our last mission for this shift. May the Christmas Spirit help us to complete successfully this mission.

Gu e Gui, a dupla improvável | Gu and Gui, the improbable team

20191123_172928

Of all the cadets, no one would tell that Gu (Gustavo) and Gui (Guilherme) ever be fireman. Gustavo was thin, was always sick and scared of everything, avoiding by any means to participate on the activities. On the other hand, Guilherme was a such a rebel kid. He frequently vanish during cadets instruction, howewvwe it was easy to find him. He would be either in the exercise tower, or inside an ambulance, striking all butons he could find.

Of Gu, the instructores used to say that if would ever be a fireean, he'd puked in every situation. About Gui, they say that he's lack of discipline was completely incompatible with fireman activity.

The truth is that they both grown up and despite their differences, they make a great team. Gu studied for paramedic and Gui is the best man in unhooking. Gui use to lead the team. He is shrewd to analise every situation and quickly takes action with no waste of time. Gu admires him, cause he knows better than anyone, that every minute counts to save a life. So he takes his friend leadership most of the times, and that way they make a successful team.

Época de incêndios | Fire season

IMG_5839

Prevention can be a very boring task, but actually it is most needed and it's importance is uncoutable, specially when the fire season is close.

Marco and Rui start early their job. They carefully scroll the map area asigned to them and decide where the vegetation needs to be cut, they establish where should be the firebreaks. They also talk to people, clarifiyng when it's the right time to make backyard burnings, giving advices and sensitize population to the importance of maintaining their lands clean of vegetation.

Some days, they have with them the clearence teams. In these days, the guys manage field work, by establishing intervention prioritys, and while these jobs goes, they seize the time to do some forest registration.

It´s a job that seems endless, but the truth is that, step by step, the forest is becaming cleaner, much more organized and safer from it's worst and treacherous enemy: fire.

Treino de bombeiro | Firefighter training

IMG_6253

Team Flame is one of the best succeeded in the firefighter course. The guys are commited in achieving a good result and they have been putting all their efforts in it.

Course instructor acknowlodge their capacities and demands no less than theirs full effort in each exercise. Everybody knows his yelling trought the megaphone. The guys already know that when he picks up the megaphone, it's gonna be a difficult exercise that will need their best.

The team started the course in the bottom of the table rank, behind the other teams: team Spark, team Ember and team Flash, but their motivation and strong effort made them climb up, all the way to the top.

Marco wants to be a fireman, so he can defend up his land from fire that strikes his village every summer. Jacinto wants to be first-aider on an ambulance and Mané dreams about working with the vehicles of extrication. The course is almost finished, so it only takes a few more effort to complete it in the top rank. If so, they will be able to choose their job placement.

Curiosos | Curious people

IMG_6248

Whenever there's an accidente, there always be some curious folks that pop out of nowhere. Even if there's no one in the area, when the accidente took place, these folks immediately pop out, giving their opinion, discussing among themselves, and querreling the whole time.

Instead of helping, these guys only make harder the job of those who are trying to solve things: they confuse the ones that are taking statements and make difficult to authorities to move around tne scene, as they always want to come a little bit closer to take a better look.

Agent Carrot knows this kind of people too well, and when he arrives at the scene, he starts immediately to establishing a securety perimeter. With endless patience, but with firm voice and gestures, that admitt no kind of argument, he explains why that they can't and shouldn't be that close from the scenario, and by doing that he takes space, forcing them to step back.

Fireman Tomás is standing by, and quickly put in place some signalling, stablishing a securety perimeter. Agent Carrot steps in again, saying out loud that everyone that trespasses the signs, will be taken to headquarters, and filled with a penalty for obstruction to justice.

Um salvamento simples | Simple rescue

IMG_5845

A days work in a fireman life, is always incertain. There's always someone getting in some kind of trouble, that end's up needing somekind of help.

Today, by the end of the morning, José and Carlos got a call to rescue a group of biologists that were having a walk and to reach a special and rare specimen of a plant, somehow manage to find themselfes in the bottom of a gulch, without being able to get back up again.

The rescue became a very simple one and in no time the ten participants were safe and sound. The last person to be rescued, was Clara, the lider of the group. Brunette, with big green eyes, the girl reached the fireman very upset with her lack of sense, in allowing the group risked so much. Her cheeks were pink witch heighlighted the green of her eyes, and, while telling the firemen how it all happened she kept rolling up her sleeves and putting them back down once again. The girl was really nervous!

José and Carlos took a glimpse at one another, and smiled. They were used to these nonsense situations. Despite the simple rescue, they also took a deep breath, relieved and in no time the three of them were laughing with the all situation.
