Andorra, senior trip, 1998, just a few seconds before i deslocate my shoulder and break a leg right in front of the coolest girl from school.

Everything was going fine. I already had descended that track several times, but of course, no Mary around. This time, just in the end of the track i spotted her looking at me, seeing me snowboarding. And that was it: i immediatly lost all coordination, my legs became some kind of jelly and i felt like snow and me became one, in a second.

When i openned my eyes, there was already a rescuer putting a splint in my leg. Saw Mary walking away with her friends laughing and i blacked out again.

Begged mom and dad to get me home as soon as i got out of the hospital and spent the months until the end of the school year avoiding Mary.

Andorra, senior trip, 1998, in the biggest opportunity og my life, to conquer the most coolest girl in the school!

A pele mais desejada | Most wanted fur

20211205_111526

It was harsh to leave the igloo today: the winter is at it’s peak and it really is very cold outside. First unwilling, but slowly convinced, the kids got up and prepared them selves to go out with dad, to check the traps, placed a few days ago. The kids are wishing for a fox, wich is the most wanted fur for their warm clothes. Cathy wants a new coat and Thomas a new blanket for his bed.

Snows, the family dog joined the group, after some long stretches, having some trouble to leave it’s warm place too. But the perspective of maybe catch a snow hare and eat a warm meal, sharpened it’s instinct and finally placed itself along with owners, ready for the walk.

Pose na neve | Snow pose

IMG_2428

The pose is only for the fotography, as at the first day in the snow, no one masters skis, ski poles or snowboards. The falls and unbalenced moves have been constant, as well as the laughs and the attempts of helping others, wich usually ends up in more falls.

Everybody say that is the way it goes: the first day is terrible, the second one you start to get the hang of it and at the third one, if you can move from all of the sored muscles, you actually start to see results.

The family is confidente that these will be some fun days. Not so confident if someone will get the hang of it!

Patinar pela vida | Skating through life

IMG_8159

Cair e levantar. Escorregar e ganhar equilíbrio novamente. Perder a confiança e recuperá-la no momento a seguir. Tentar uma e outra vez. Arriscar.

Rise and fall. Slip and regain balance again. Loose confidence and get it back seconds later. Try over and over again. Take a chance.

We all slide, with skates in our feet, in this life ring. We hold on each other. Sometimes we hold, sometimes we are hold and when we noticed it, we are jumping and doing some pirouette, knowing that falling will be less painfull, cause they will be sustained.

As long as a helping hand is there to held us and help us to stand up, as long as we have a shoulder to host our tears and as long there is a smile to give us strength, it will all be okay.

O trenó do avô | Grandfather sleigh

IMG_8160

Small snowflakes had been falling from the sky in the past few days, so fragile, that melted immediately as soon as they touched the ground. Children had their eyes put up to the sky, hoping and waiting for the first big snow of the season, longing for playing in the snow. Finnaly, after waiting a couple of days, the snow falled hard and for quite a long time, covering the land in white. The old grandfather sleigh, restored by one of the kids father came out, shinning bright and renewed, for the first big snow. The kids couldn't be more happier. Indeed, one more new made them even happier: the school would be closed in the next couple of days!

Matias, o boneco de neve | Matias, the snowman

IMG_6179

Boa sorte meninos!

To everyone's joy, snow announced easter break. When the children left school in the last day before break, snow was all around. It was complete hapiness for the kids.

Next day in the morning, as waking up early it's only difficult in school days, Alexandre and Sara put hands together for their project: build a snowman.

Occasionally it snows in the city, but it's usually just a few snowflakes, witch melt in no time, leaving everything covered up with a dirty mud, unsuited for playing. But this year snow came heavily and it's expected to snow even more in the next few days.

The children from the street came together and started a contest on the best snowman, so the street is full of committed kids that are trying to build the best snowman ever. Kids keep coming and going, picking up tools (shovels, buckets, rakes,...) and the most unique accessories they can find.

Alexandre and Sara's work is well underway and they hope that their effort will be rewarded.

Goog luck kids!

Tomás, esquiador de topo | Tomás, top skiier

IMG_6172

It's Tomás bad temper that needs to be worked out, not his skills as a skier. Skiing comes easily and very natural for him. Looks like he needs no effort to do the most complicated maneuver and he doesn't need much time to achieve a new skill.

He would be any coach´s dream, if he hadn't that bad temper, that turns him unwanted among his fellow athletes and undesirable in tournments and competitions. He is impulsive and he's a meltin pot ready to explode if things don't go as he desires. Very few are willing to put up to this, so he practices alone too often.

But Tomás knows that he as what it takes to achive the highest goals: he as skills and he is talented, so, next week he will start to work with a new couch: Petra. She is a former top skier and also known for some inapropriate attitudes towards her competitors, coachs and even judges. Because of that, she never make it to the top, and she knows that.

If Petra will not tame Tomás, no one will.

Aventura na neve | Snow adventure

IMG_6170

It snowed all night and by the morning the snow is perfect for skiing. Catarina and Joel woke up early and prepared their equipment, with the certain that they will spend a few fun hours in the fresh and soft snow.

The two youngs met at the university, and after several tries, here they are, up in the mountain. These days they will forget about mid term exams, all the group works to be done and all the classes they're missing. It's for a good cause: the snow is fantastic.

Catarina is an excellent and experient skier. She was born in the mountain, and by the time she began to walk, she began skiing too. She loves to feel the wind tickling in her neck, feel the lower branches from the trees touching her legs while she slides fast between them, but most of all the loves to feel that she is a part of the montain, that she belongs there.

Joel is a countryside kind of guy. He already had seen snow, but it is the first time that he's feet get to wear a pair of skis. He has a little afraid, but he is excited. The brighteness on Catarina's eyes tell him that he can trust her and her entusiastic speech lights up in Joel the wiil to learn fast and fly away with her to see the mountain.

Finalmente neve | Snow at last

IMG_6185

Finally snowed up in hills!

Grandma Matilde lives on the bottom of the hills and love to welcome in her home her grandchildren and their friends that invade her house for a few days in this time of the year for the tradicional playing in the snow.

Every year, the children await grandmas call to tell them that snow had fallen. Finally the phonecall came, and by tomorrow afternoon they should be with their feet buried in the snow.

Grandma welcomes every one with arms wide open. The smell of warm cake is filling the house as well as other grandmother cuddles: a warm fire place, quince jam and hot chocolate.

The kids don't want to wast time and in one second are ready and leaving the house running to the snow, taking with them sleigth, skis and snowboards that grandma rescued from the attic, preparing the arrival of the children.

In no time, the hills are covered with castles, igloos, forts and snowman every where. But most of all the hills are covered by the children laughter.
